This is a must have in today’s business world to be successful. Almost all successful businesses in the world use this tactic one way or another. For example: “Would you like fries with that?” The famous up-sell of McDonald’s.
Up-sells are profit creating machines that can push companies to different levels by increasing the overall total dollar profitability of the transaction. The psychology is the customer has already pulled out his credit card, said yes so another yes to a product is much easier. You can get upwards of 80% conversions on up-sells online if done right. All without having to spend any additional money on advertising!
If you don’t have a chance to do an automated up-sell online, you can still do this in your sales strategy by offering a deluxe option or by adding in smaller items at the point of sale. Start doing this tomorrow and watch your profits increase.
Here is a huge bonus tip when putting into place the up-sell:
Make sure it is no more than 60% of the original purchase price. This is the tipping point where conversion rates really start falling off. Some companies deploy multiple up-sells (see Godaddy.com) though it is usually best to start out simple and test from there as you can lose customer affinity.
