As adults, we sometimes think that our imagination is useless; something just for kids. We try to live in the present and in “reality.” But that sort of thinking can be very harmful. Many people don’t realize just how much their imagination affects them, and what they are missing by imagining the wrong things.
Your imagination is a powerful tool for reaching the long-term visions you have set in your life. By taking some time in the day to visualize and see what you want your future to look like, you make it more likely to happen. You start taking more steps to reach that place where you want to go. But before you can start seeing yourself living the life you want, you have to actually have a vision of what it is you want.
If you want to succeed at all in life, you need a vision to work towards. You need to take some time and think about what you really want and why. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” You need a clear vision of where you want your life to go. Then write it down. The people who reach their visions are the ones who write them down and look at them daily. You always want to be reminding yourself of what you want, and you’ll stay on track more to get it.
After you have that vision figured out, your next step is to imagine yourself living with that vision fulfilled. You need to make it real to you and see yourself accomplishing it. If your vision is to own a business that makes a certain amount of money each year so that your whole family never has to worry about money, then start seeing yourself living that way. Take time to close your eyes, and just see your family being able to take great vacations together. Or being able to buy a boat, or nice house, or whatever it is you want.
You won’t be able to reach your visions unless you can really get them inside of you. Make them become so real that you know for sure that they will happen. If you just have a vision but don’t make it real for you, then you’re more likely to never reach it. The more you see it in your mind, the more you believe that you can accomplish it, and the more motivated you’ll be to press forward through difficulties to get it.
Always use your imagination to make you visions more vivid to you. But if you don’t have any visions for your life yet, start today and come up with some things you want. Be clear and specific, and ask God to help lead you.
